Seongsan Ilchulbong (성산일출봉), meaning “Sunrise Peak at Castle Mountain,” is a 182m tuff cone on the eastern tip of Jeju Island, designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

The Hike

The 30-minute climb up 99 steep steps leads to the crater rim. The views of the green bowl-shaped crater and the ocean beyond are breathtaking at any time of day.

Haenyeo Divers

At the base, haenyeo (female free divers, 해녀) dive for abalone, conch, and sea urchin in traditional fashion. Watch from the rocks or join a tasting session at the nearby market.
